square painting 1

mixed media with copper, spray paint and wax on wood

30 x 30 x 3 cm

2023

This piece was made during January and February at the Begijnenvest studio in 2023.

I had recently returned to working with bright colour after many months being preoccupied with making grisailles paintings with graphite.

The general attitude to texture and mixed media in the piece continues my ongoing preoccupation with coagulating organic surfaces.

Again, here, I wanted the surface to emerge as if by inevitability rather than through my ‘painters’ hand.

I am not overly concerned with interpretation but more on the expression and seductive qualities of the material.

If I have some concerns with how the surface is interpreted, it would be that the poetry, brought about by the accumulation of materials and balance of colour, might come through. Indeed, that is in so many ways what I am trying to achieve.

mixed media with spray painting and glass wax

2023

This piece was painted in May 2023 at the Begijnenvest studio.

It refers directly to Square Painting 1, but the material pallet has changed. Glass wax mixed with pigment relaxes the whole surface and allows for more translucency. The main preoccupations as stated have not changed.

At their core the paintings directly correlate one another. But here, I was attempting a more dynamic flow across the surface.

Yet again, the materials, as always for me, are the primary factors in the construction of a surface.
